Amanda Brugel

Brugel was the sole Canadian part of the cast in Season 1 of the series and she was only seen on occasion. After Season 2, she joined the regular cast and still a part the cast today. In response to questions about her character in the show and if there were parallels to her life before the cameras, Brugel stated that she was able to draw on her personal experiences of race discrimination in relation to the way that Marthas are treated. "I haven't used it in her house position as Martha, but also in her personal life as Martha but as I say, my past moments when I'm feeling like I'm being stifled through circumstances due to race." Though I've not experienced physical violence because of my skin colour however, I have certainly experienced insults verbally. The kind of racist slurs that feel like a hit, or an impact to me, I could use on the set when someone makes a statement that feels hard and biting. I use that feeling nearly every time because I can feel as if she's been punched or slapped in some manner in nearly every scene."
